| ART COLLECTOR WORLD : GUILLERMO ACEVEDO PROFILE Guillermo Acevedo is a native of Arequipa, Peru, who migrated to the US in 1959 as an intellectual refugee. He fell in love with San Diego and worked as an art designer for local companies. In the sixties the city entered a stage of redevelopment and many historical homes were lost. But, Acevedo became known for renderings of old Victorian homes in SD neighborhoods, his images of Balboa park and surroundings and his paintings that documented the tuna industry in the San Diego Bay. He also contributed to the appreciation of environmental preservation, local citizenship and civic pride, eventually influencing the creation of Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) in 1969. Guillermo Acevedo helped nourish the local San Diego arts scene in the 60's and 70's. Inspired by socio-political movements of those times, he mentored a young group of artists during the Chicano Movement and opened the first Latino-owned art gallery / multicultural center in Downtown San Diego in 1976. During these years he traveled throughout Europe, South America and the American Southwest, documenting historical architecture and landscapes. He became known as a master draftsman and for delicate attention to detail in capturing the human condition. Before his death, in 1988, he was honored by then San Diego Mayor Maureen O'Connor and by SOHO for his life contributions to arts and culture. Acevedo's work is still very appreciated and currently on display at the San Diego International Airport and the gallery home of his son and fellow artist, Mario Torero.
